Foundations of Non-Clinical Grief Support

You want to do grief work well from the start. This course gives you the foundation: what grief is across every kind of loss, how to listen without fixing, how to structure a support relationship, and where your role ends and a clinician's begins. No prior grief training required.

What you'll be able to do

  • Explain grief, mourning, and loss in plain language, including non-death losses like divorce, job loss, and illness.
  • Use listening and questioning skills that support someone without minimizing or advising.
  • Run a support relationship from the first conversation to a clear ending.
  • Recognize when a person needs more than non-clinical support and refer them without stigma.

Questions people ask

What is GriefField?

GriefField is an education and opportunity platform for people who work with grief. It publishes its own training and lists jobs, events, and resources from across the grief care field.

Is there grief coach training for people without a clinical license?

Yes. Foundations of Non-Clinical Grief Support is built for grief coaches, doulas, chaplains, peer support leaders, and career changers. It teaches non-clinical grief support, including how to recognize when someone needs clinical care and how to refer them.

Does the course make me a certified grief coach?

No. You receive a GriefField Certificate of Completion, which documents that you finished the course and passed its assessments. Certification is granted by credentialing organizations, not by training providers. If you're pursuing a credential, check that organization's education requirements before you enroll.

Does the course count for continuing education?

The course is professional development. If you need CE hours for a license or credential, check with your own licensing or credentialing organization before you enroll. The same rule applies to every course listed on GriefField.

Does a listing on GriefField mean it is approved?

No. Listings are listed on GriefField. Each one shows the provider or employer, format, location, cost, duration, and date so you can read what a thing is and decide for yourself.

Can I submit a training, job, event, or resource?

Yes. Trainers, employers, event hosts, support group leaders, nonprofits, and publishers can submit a listing for review. Submissions are checked against the original source before they go live.
